Why is Rio Puelo so special?
“There are other beautiful places in the world but none like this one…”
Located south of the Lake District of southern Chile and at the edge of the Reloncavi Estuary, this area is best known for its beautiful, breathtaking landscapes and for the great salmon and trout that can be caught in the Puelo River.
The whole trip to Rio Puelo is sublime. There are majestic views around every corner of the road that include waterfalls, volcanoes, national parks, ancient forests, pristine turquoise lakes, meandering rivers and unique wildlife. In the Alerce Andino National Park you can explore the giant Alerce trees, which can live up to 4000 years! You can climb the Yates and Osorno Volcanoes, visit the Toboganes (waterfalls) at La Junta, kayak in the Reloncavi Estuary and in Llanquihue Lake, relax in the new hot springs, and much more.
Your trip to Rio Puelo
“We suggest that you pack a good camera and that you come prepared to enjoy this wild place.”
Rio Puelo is reached by car or bus from Puerto Montt. The trip takes approximately 3 hours (depending how many times you stop for photo opportunities) and about 3.5 hours by bus. Travelling through the Carretera Austral will take you along the coast all the way to Puelo. This route includes crossing the estuary on a ferry, which is, in itself, a great adventure! Travelling through the picturesque, German-inspired town of Puerto Varas you will border the Llanquihue Lake before entering the mountainous area. This route is very pleasant and it gets even better once you leave the mountains – you will see the estuary opening up to welcome you with some of the best views that southern Chile has to offer!
Cars can be hired in Puerto Montt (we can arrange this for you). Alternatively, we suggest that you use our transfer shuttle service from the airport, or your hotel, for a stress-free and comfortable trip. Travelling with us gives you the flexibility to change your route if you see something that looks interesting along the way and you will avoid some of the hassles of traveling in overcrowded buses and filling paperwork when hiring a car.
Activities to enjoy in Rio Puelo
You will never get tired of this unique place and you will want each day to extend a few hours more.”
Although fishing has been the main tourist attraction in this area, trekking, mountain climbing, horse riding, and kayaking are activities that have become increasingly popular. We can arrange these activities for you, your friends and family to enjoy while you stay with us.
Costs
“The worst that can happen is that your budget restricts your trip and that you are left wanting to have seen more.”
Our prices include accommodation, food, transportation, access to parks that have costs, and tour guides. The costs vary according to the places you want to visit and the activities you want to participate in. Our goal is that you travel with the confidence that you will not need to pay for anything more than you have requested in your travel itinerary, unless you want us to organize, for example, a special meal for you or an extra activity once you arrive. Costs associated with tours and activities provided by our partners are included in our general prices. Contact us through email, Facebook, or phone and tell us what you want to do in our beloved Rio Puelo and we will give you a quote.
Note: our prices for the 2021/2002 season will be detailed here and on Facebook at the end of September.
Covid-19 safety guidelines
Our safety protocols are based on guidelines established by the national health authority. Should you need medical care whilst in Rio Puelo, you will be attended at our new medical centre, which is staffed by a range of medical professionals. We strongly recommend that you purchase traveling insurance prior to travelling.
